Dr. Zimmerman spent 40 years as a staff person and as a consultant, working with both commercial and nonprofit organizations, helping organizational teams grow, develop, and succeed. Joel’s specialties are organization and leadership development, program management, training, group facilitation, and team building.
Now retired in Raleigh, NC, Joel continues his life-long work as a volunteer for nonprofit organizations. As pro bono consultant for the Executive Service Corps of the Triangle, Joel coordinates ESC’s “Board Leadership Boot Camp,” which has trained about 300 nonprofit board members over the last four years. He also facilitates ESC’s nonprofit Executive Director Roundtable. Other engagements for ESC have included board and staff retreats, strategic planning projects, and Service Enterprise training.
Among other recent volunteer positions, Joel was the NC state data manager for the AARP Safe Driving program and an instructor for the underage drinking prevention program for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He is currently President of the Board of Directors for Wake County Senior Games and a founding member of the Warrior Rising Board of Directors.
Joel holds an M.A. in organizational design and effectiveness from Fielding University, an M.S. in industrial psychology from Purdue University, and a Ph.D. from Northwestern in experimental psychology.
